Leather Edge Paint Hack Using Fire
Now, it's always best to shake your edge paint the day before use, especially if you haven't used a particular colour for a long time. This gives tiny bubbles the time to burst inside the bottle.
But this trick is a good one to bank if you're in a hurry, and your edge paint has separated after a long time without use.
You can also use a stirrer if you clean it first using alcohol. Never place anything dirty into your edge paint storage bottle.
However, the demonstrated trick is by far the best.. because fire.🔥

Excellent video! For anyone who doesnt have the rubber laying around, some of that rug padding works in a pinch
Great tip!
great tip, ty as always.
Glad to help!
Great tip thank you so much🙏🙏
Glad it was helpful!
I brew tea here in the states, cheers 🫖👌
Might this be a useful hack to get a better finish overall, even if air bubbles are not present?
I don't see how momentary heat would improve the finish, but it may be worth you giving it a try to see if makes any difference.
Here's a side quest for you: hardening vegetable tanned leather to make snooker/pool cue leather tips.
Great tip! Makes sense since flame used for resin, too!
🤯🤯🤯
Wow! Great tip! I definitely needed to see this!
Glad it was helpful!
Philip thank you so much this is an amazing trick man...
You're welcome! It's a fun one 👍
Thank you for this tip. Down in Texas
Glad you find it useful Larry 👍
Would a hot creasing iron also work, or must a flame be used?
Good question. If you tried this with a creasing iron, you would get liquid edge paint on the tip, and it would begin to burn. A flame for a split second won't affect the paint.
That's a nice knife!...That slant makes a hell of a difference...to be honest I find my cutting mat has enough friction to hold the leather in place skiving. Tend to only use my granite slab for tooling etc., Yours is a handy tip though.
Please can you hunt down the oldest Hermes leather bags please. And/or saddles. The new stuff has lost its authenticity completely. Hermes is either celebrity "fashion"-ista or school gate Mums gossiping about you know what and who.

Wonderful work sir. Congratulations for this beatiful job.
Thank you Fabiano!
What a beautiful, simple, yet elegant design. I love the double-use handles and how the strap rolls into the bag. Great design!
I appreciate that, thank you!
best sheath I have ever seen, so slick
Thank you Bobby!
Very nice Video in terms of information. The music is way too loud for me and distracting. Thanks for the information - going to buy a Acetal Copolymer mat for cutting!
This is old. I don't add music to these videos any more. Glad you found it helpful.
Looking forward to this video. How's your hand my friend?
Much better thank you! The video has been out a while. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/EvsLIylmJ00/видео.htmlsi=51n94XxENqOd2WQ8
@@LeathercraftMasterclass awesome! ✌️
What is the size of Your awl blade?
It's tapered, so it depends on how far you push it through. It came with the awl.
I'm sorry, what kind of compound on the leather? I hear "grim" compound but that's probably not it.
Green compound 👍
Very nice
Thank you Ashley
Спасибо Вам за Ваш труд. Очень познавательный контент. Привет из России.

Is the hammer a sand weighted one? Not sure of the proper name. England
It's not a dead blow hammer, no. Just a weighted nylon hammer
Any thoughts on your hammer vs a maul?
I find a maul a bit cumbersome, but it really depends on personal taste and what you're used to. A maul may be better suited to detail work such as tooling however.
I have been searching all over looking for tips on dealing with lambskin leather as I find it impossible to skive and punch chisel holes for sewing as the whole are not easy to see to get the needle through the correct spot as the whole almost disappear even though I push the chisel completely through multiple times. Also find it very hard to cut as it stretches so easily while cutting. Is goatskin that much different from lambskin? And if so any advice on dealing with sheepskin?
Yes, goatskin is much easier to work with as the skin is more dense and stretch resistant. Lambskin takes more skill to work with and it's delicate, but with a sharp enough blade, it should skive well. Try pressing the blade down harder as you skive forward, this compresses the skin making it easier to cut. Sheepskin is different and not as nice as lambskin. It's not that great to work with and is the cheapest skin for a reason.
@@LeathercraftMasterclass Thanks for the advice. I ordered some cowhide to work with. Probably shouldn’t have started with lambskin leather 🤣.
how are you just finding this out when every single leather product manufacture has been useing this technique for centuries
Could you please provide examples of this exact technique in use by a product manufacturer? By the sounds if it, your list should be extensive.
Well, after giving you 4 days to prove your point, your silence has provided your answer for you. I believe you are confusing this technique with a 'turned edge'.
Dunhill made in london leather goods is ace - charming touch is the leather card they include stamped with the craftsman name
That IS a nice touch 👌
Never dreamed of creating a luxurious cigar case. I have dreamed of creating a luxurious rifle case though, hint hint. Would love to see your take on that one Philip. Cigar case looks amazing. Hope you have a wonderful weekend Philip, Cheers.
Yeah, I would love to do one of those as a course. Just need to get my firearms certificate sorted first
@@LeathercraftMasterclass Na you don't need your firearms certificate to make a case 🙂
you make a course on a luxurious rifle case and you will have a another long time subscriber to you masterclass. Btw to anyone that reads this Philip's course are amazing, I learnt so much from them. He is such an amazing teacher! I just told him that I would not get his class again unless he does a course on how to make a rifle case😉
Buenos consejos todos. Sin dudarlo, el mejor es el de utilizar buenos elementos de seguridad para las manos en este caso pero igualmente es importante para los ojos, oídos y pulmones según sea la necesidad. Gracias
Good joke😂
I don’t think you can really make luxury if you do not appreciate the beauty of it.
Amen. An unnerving amount of people don't get this!
What's that tool you used on the edges? Isn't that a tool for woodwork? I like it!
I used a few on the edges, are you referring to the leather plane?
@@LeathercraftMasterclass just googled it and yes, that's the thing. I didn't know they existed. I'll take a look at some. Thank you :)
You make it look easy. I know better. Great skills, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, precise and straight to the point
Glad you found it useful!
i was like " wait...i know that knife!" then I checked the channel and i was like "Phillip!". thanks, im going to try this
Haha! Yeah, give it a go 👍
Dead link on tool
It seems the website has been changed. Link now updated 👍
To maintain hole count across the two differing total stitch run lengths?
Yes, well that's the idea anyway. It's impossible to get it exact with fixed stitch counts on irons. If we wanted to maintain the hole count, i'd need something like a 12.3459338499 spi iron which doesn't exist. So we'll still need to 'lose' a stitch here and there to compensate for the mismatch.
What did you use for the stifiner
It's a very old technique that I've bought back. I'll keep it under wraps for now as some haven't watched the course yet.
👍
I always miss the live notifications somehow... thanks for uploading as always!
Ah, that's a shame! Hope you enjoyed the video 👍
4:19 So, the tape is used to keep the edges together until stitched?
That's correct Arleen
Fine work, thank you.
Thank you too!
Where do you buy this tool?
This one is unbranded. Apologies, I do not recollect where I purchased it.
Some of the Dixon hammers missed the hardening phase. My mate bought one in 1977, and it was soft. A Blacksmith was able to harden it, so they used good steel. I swapped him another one and have used his for 50 years now, and it is still a tool one is proud to own. I have another here that is soft as well, yet at least two others that are good and hard. Dixon did themselves no favours with poor quality control, perhaps? Sad really.
Yeah I did wonder what went wrong with my newer hammer compared to the old one. I agree, they did not evolve.
Lol!
:D
